Apply for a home

To apply and bid for a home with us, you need to be a member of Newcastle Homes. We have created a guide on how to register if you are a new member.

We have put together some information on how to find a home and what happens once we receive your application below.

If you are currently a tenant then you may also like to consider swapping homes with another Newcastle City Council tenant or another social housing tenant (mutual exchange).

If you need to move because of medical problems or illness, let us know in your application so that we can assess your needs. If you need help with your application or have any questions, please fill in our contact form or call us on 0191 278 8600 to speak to our Housing Solutions team.

Applying for available homes

Each week new available properties are advertised on the Newcastle Homes websiteand in their property newsletters.

You will need to log in to your Newcastle Homes account to view and place a bid on properties that you are interested in.

  • Homes are advertised from Thursday at 00:01 to Monday at 23:59.
  • You can place 3 bids per week.

When will I know if I have been successful?

To stay informed about your bids log in to your Newcastle Homes account.

After bidding has closed we will assess the expressions of interest and contact successful applicants within one week.

How are homes allocated?

Properties are allocated based on your housing needs, however we often have some 'available now' properties that are allocated on a first come first serve basis. Some age restrictions may apply.

To find out more on how your housing needs will be assessed, read our Lettings policy.

In some circumstances additional criteria may also be used in the allocation of properties where a Local Lettings Plan (LLP) is in place. For further details of how these work please visit the Local Lettings page of the Newcastle City Council website.

What happens after being offered a property?

When you are offered a home, a Housing Services officer will contact you to discuss when the property will be available to view and provide our tenancy agreement which covers your and our responsibilities for the upkeep of the property.

When the property is ready to let, your Housing Services Officer will contact you to arrange a sign-up appointment. The officer will guide you through the sign-up, helping to make the process as simple as possible, before handing you the keys to your new home. You will also be given a Tenant's Handbook to take home, containing useful information about your tenancy. Your Housing Officer will also discuss the additional services we can offer to help you settle into your home.

When signing for your tenancy and collecting your keys, you need to pay one week's rent in advance. This amount is your rent and service charges minus any Universal Credit housing element. To find out how you can make payments, visit our rent and bills page.
