Debt

If you do find yourself in a situation where you are unable to pay some or all of your bills, you should not borrow more money. If you take out more credit now, you could end up in a worse situation.

Debt is a big problem, which can have serious consequences, and as a result you should not ignore it. The earlier you get advice for your debt problems, the better. Independent debt advisors are available to speak to and are a good place to start.

Free debt advice is available from places such as Stepchange which offers a debt advice service 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. You can visit their website www.stepchange.org or call 0800 1381 111.

Help with any debts

Energy

Gas and electricity prices rose by 54% in April 2022 which caused huge financial stress for many households across the country. To help protect consumers, the Government has announced the Energy Price Guarantee which came into effect on 1 October 2022.

This new scheme will reduce the unit cost of electricity and gas so that a household with typical energy use in Great Britain pays, on average, around £2,500 a year on their energy bill, until April 2023. A one-off £400 fuel discount payment for households will also be given to 30 million households, with individual suppliers determining how their customers are paid. If you’d like to find out if you’re eligible and how you’ll be paid your discount, contact your supplier directly.

Anyone struggling with gas and electricity bills or who is worried about heating their home, should contact their supplier in the first instance. You can also visit our website for information on saving energy and reducing bills. Visit www.yhn.org.uk/service-customers/save-energy.

If you’re worried about your electricity and gas bills, or you are having problems heating your home visit www.newcastle.gov.uk/energyadvice.

If you have solar panels on your property you will benefit from free electricity generated by these - please make sure they're in good working order by letting us know of any issues and allowing us access to survey them when requested. Find out more here

If you live in a Housing Plus sheltered scheme, utilise the communal areas to help to save on energy or speak confidentially to your Housing Plus Officer who will be able to signpost you to additional support.
