Stay safe this winter

As temperatures plummet and the cost of living crisis continues, many people are looking for alternative ways to keep themselves and their homes warm.

Watch Manager Scott Wilson of Newcastle Central Community Fire Station has some important fire safety advice that could save your life.

  • Never use candles as the main source of heating your home as the naked flames could cause a fire. If you do use candles, always remember to put them out before going to bed, use tea lights in a proper holder, and never place candles directly underneath any household objects or fixtures.
  • Electric blankets can pose a significant risk if used incorrectly. Blankets under 10-years old should be regularly checked for frayed wires, breaks in the elements and for general damage. It’s advised that all blankets over the age of 10-years are safely disposed of.
  • Keep portable heaters at a safe distance from combustible items like furniture and people, and never use them to dry clothes. Make sure heaters are in good condition and do not use bottled gas or petroleum based heaters if you live in a block of flats.
  • Never smoke in bed as falling asleep with a lit cigarette could prove fatal.

Residents can book a Safe and Well Check from Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service where smoke alarms will be fitted free of charge where appropriate. Please contact TWFRS by using their new Virtual Safety Check tool on their website at www.twfire.gov.uk.
