Apprenticeships are recognised and valued across the country as a key way to learn a new skill or trade.

Figures show that in 2021/22, nearly 350,000 apprenticeships were started nationally, with more than 5.2million started since May 2010.

Taking part in an apprenticeship with YHN could provide you with your first step on your career path, or give you an opportunity to try something new.

Our staff are on hand to help decide which role is best for you, they will talk to you about where you might be a good fit, both before and during the application process.

We have various opportunities at different times of the year, these may include gardening, business administration and customer service.

As part of the recruitment process, priority will be given to applicants who live in a YHN managed property. Unfortunately, those who have previously been employed by YHN as an apprentice or trainee will not be eligible for current programmes.

Once shortlisted, the applicant is invited to a recruitment event to find out more about YHN, the apprenticeship programme and the roles available, while also showcasing what they can offer and how they would be a good fit.

During the process, staff will chat to the potential apprentices individually, work in small and large groups, giving them a chance to shine in different activities while also talking about what roles they are interested in.

The discussions also gives them a chance to find out what the college commitment is and to judge whether it is the right option for them.

Eleanor Whitaker, Apprentice and Your Homes Your Jobs Manager at YHN, said: “Our apprentices get employability support throughout their contract, access to internal vacancies and lots of support to apply for roles within and outside YHN.

“The majority of customers do move onto something more permanent either during or at the end of their apprenticeship.

“If there is an apprenticeship you are interested in that hasn’t been advertised with us then get in touch because we can always go and talk to the relevant departments and see if they would be able to accommodate someone.

“If we have someone with a particular skill or interest who we think would be suitable for an apprenticeship with us, then we will always try and find the best fit for them.”

Over the last five years we have supported 62 apprentices. Last year, 15 apprentices started with YHN, with 7 already progressing into longer term employment while 6 continue on their apprenticeship.

Age is not a barrier, with the oldest apprentice being 64 while the youngest was 16.

And there are 31 staff at YHN currently doing apprenticeships to upskill.
