Sean McGuinness is 19 and lives in Walker.
Sean joined YHN through the Kickstart scheme which is open to 16-25 year olds on Universal Credit. Kickstarters are guaranteed a 6-month work placement with employability support built into the programme.
Sean works in our Repairs & Construction team in gas servicing.
“I was struggling to find work since Covid, I actually had a job lined up just before lockdown hit but because of the lockdown it never came to anything. It was pretty gutting.
“I met Rachel from the Employability team at a jobs fair and she told me about the Kickstart scheme YHN was part of. I really wanted to get a trade and she gave me loads of help, explained we’d get a paid 6-month placement and loads of training and support.
“I’m loving working as part of the Repairs & Construction team. It’s very different to anywhere I’ve worked in the past, so much more supportive. I work with a great bunch of lads. I’m a really practical, hands-on person and as soon as I started I was out on the vans getting stuck in. My mentor is brilliant and I’m hoping to get my qualifications.
“If you need some help getting into work you should definitely contact the Employability team – you’ve got nothing to lose.”
At YHN we’ve employed 40 Kickstarters, of those that completed, 80% progressed onto other roles. We’ve also recruited 32 Kickstarters across the city, of which 50% have progressed into roles at those organisations. This scheme is making a massive difference and we’re thrilled to be part of it.
