As Covid-19 continues to hit the economy, many people have found that their jobs and finances have been significantly impacted as employers continue to cut jobs or make reductions to employee work hours.

That’s why, as part of National Apprenticeship Week 2021 (8-14 February), YHN will take this opportunity to shine a light on the amazing work being done by employers and apprentices across the city, including offering our own apprenticeship opportunities for customers.

An apprenticeship can be a great opportunity for gaining qualifications while also getting some really valuable experience for your CV and being paid for your work.

YHN’s apprenticeship programme is open to people who live in homes managed by YHN and currently has opportunities including adult care, warehousing, customer service and business administration.

The programme provides apprentices with a package of support that helps people with little or no previous work experience to settle into their roles. This includes a dedicated mentor and ongoing help from the organisation’s employability team.

In honour of National Apprenticeship Week 2021, we wanted to bust some myths and address some common concerns about applying for an apprenticeship:

I’m too old to apply for an apprenticeship
Apprenticeships are open to everyone, regardless of age.

My IT skills aren’t good enough
You will get lots of training and support with IT during the apprenticeship. If you are worried about the application process just give us a call and we can help you.

I struggle with coursework and worry I couldn’t keep up a job and college work
You will be given time during your working hours to attend college sessions and complete coursework. There will be lots of support available for you too if you find the coursework challenging.

I worry it will affect my Child Tax Credits or Benefits entitlement
Anyone who is offered an apprenticeship with us will be contacted by a member of our Support and Progression team to go through your individual circumstance and make sure you will be better off in work.

I already have a higher level qualification in a different subject, can I still do an apprenticeship?
You can still do an apprenticeship as long as you do not have a qualification in the same subject which is at the same level or higher. For example, if you have a degree in Geography, you can still do a Level 2 apprenticeship in Customer Service.

If you’re considering applying for an apprenticeship with us then you can find out more on our apprenticeship page, or get in touch with our Employability team on 07814 753088 or employabilityteam@yhn.org.uk.

The application deadline for the YHN apprenticeship programme is midnight on Thursday 18 February 2021.
