Your Homes Newcastle (YHN) Customer Service Committee member Zara St Clair has been honoured with a Prime Minister’s Points of Light award, created to recognise inspirational volunteers who are making a change in their community.
Zara was commended for her community work in the Chapel Denton and Westerhope area during the pandemic, leading a team of over 70 volunteers to support local residents with aid such as prescription and food shopping pick-ups and delivery and setting up a befriending network for socially isolated residents.
She also went on to establish the ‘CDW Food Bank’, which offers essential food provisions to local residents 7 days a week, and has since partnered with Newcastle-based charity group Food Nation to create a 5-week educational programme which provides meal kits with recipe cards and online resources to enable people to cook nutritional meals on a budget.
To spread some festive cheer to local children this Christmas, Zara successfully applied for funds from the YHN Community Spirit Fund to help her group organise a Christmas toy drive for children across the Outer West. You can read about the toy drive and some of the other festive projects we supported with the YHN Community Spirit Fund in the latest edition of our homes & people newsletter
Speaking about her award win, Zara said: “I am truly humbled to receive this award, but it is an honour to be able to help my community. To have this recognition really does surge my spirit to continue to do what I do bigger and better. It really has shown that community spirit is alive and with the help of all the volunteers and their precious time, we have become a household name for the community. So, I would like to thank you, Prime Minister, for this award.”
