With VE Day street parties not an option last week, Your Homes Newcastle has organised a socially distanced celebration for residents in its sheltered housing and learning disability schemes.
Almost 1,000 residents at 37 schemes across Newcastle were treated to VE Day celebration packs including a poster, colour in flag, activity booklet including recipes and song lyrics as well as a pack of biscuits to help them mark the occasion while staying safe in their homes.
Tony Moore, who lives in Treetops Village in Walker and is chair of YHN’s Customer Service Committee, said: “In these unique times, where we are all playing our parts in gaining victory over a virus, it was fabulous to take time to remember those 75 years ago who played their part in gaining victory and peace in Europe.
“Our current fight requires us to stay at home to save lives, and this is made easier by having decent homes to live in. Thank you to YHN and all their residents for their part in this.”
Jen Vinton, Customer Services Director at YHN, said: “We wanted to ensure residents in our sheltered and supported housing schemes were still able to enjoy a bit of bank holiday cheer and had the opportunity to mark VE Day while still saying safe and adhering to social distancing.
“With options for celebrations limited, we came up with the idea of a celebration pack as well as a socially distanced coffee morning, so while residents are physically apart they can still enjoy a sense of community and mark the day together. I hope Tony and everyone in YHN’s schemes had an enjoyable and safe day.”
