From turkey and tinsel dinners and pensioner Christmas parties to school pantomime trips and Christmas crafts for kids, YHN’s Festive Fund grant is helping inspirational community groups to spread festive cheer throughout the city.

Your Homes Newcastle’s (YHN) Festive Fund has seen 21 community groups benefiting from some extra Christmas cash to go towards their activities and events. More than £2,000 was made available to support free community events across Newcastle.

The fund is a partnership between YHN and Ideal Boilers in which a portion of the income from new boiler installations in YHN properties is donated into a community fund to spend on local initiatives.

One of the events to receive funding was a youth club Christmas party with a visit from Santa at Monkchester Community Centre.

Margaret Allen, a volunteer at Monkchester Community centre, in Walker, who helped to organise their children’s Christmas party, said: “The night was fantastic, the kids absolutely loved it.”

“The centre is run by volunteers and we love running the youth club. There’s a big need for this type of thing in this area as it is quite deprived. We work with the kids and their families all year round, not just at Christmas, doing food donations, youth clubs, summer playschemes and special events.

“Thank you to YHN and Ideal for their kind donation, it means everything to us and the community.”

David Langhorne, Assets and Development Director at Your Homes Newcastle, said: “We’re delighted to see the positive response that our Festive Fund has had from community groups across Newcastle.

“YHN is passionate about building stronger communities through our community grants, which also include our Community Investment Fund and Positive People Positive Places scheme. The Festive Fund has been a resounding success in its first year, helping to bring people together through Christmas festivities.”

Emma Pougher, Marketing Coordinator at Ideal Boilers, said: “We believe in giving back to the local community and we are delighted to be able to help at this festive time of year. The Festive Fund is a fantastic way to help the community and we hope that the money can help make this Christmas time, extra special.”
