Meet the Sheltered Housing Officer: Derek Hornby

Derek Hornby"Hi, my name is Derek and I have been a Sheltered Housing Officer for over 17 years - how time flies when you’re having fun!  I have also been in the Merchant Navy and was a qualified chef, so I have many strings to my bow.  I’m originally from Walker and when I returned to the North East I decided I’d like to work more with people; having family, friends and other connections with people at the scheme made Monkchester Green the ideal place to work – I have a real sense of belonging here.

"I’m really looking forward to having some events and activities in our newly refurbished on-site community centre – Christmas parties here are always a winner!

"Working here I’ve learned that everyone is different and I’ve picked up some real “people skills”. If I had to describe myself I would say that I am outgoing, I can be diplomatic, and I like a good laugh!"

What will my bungalow be like?

Each bungalow has its own lounge, kitchen, bathroom and bedroom(s). Doorways are wide, enabling wheelchair access. Each bungalow has a number of warden pull cords which link each resident to the CCAS Control Room in case of emergency. Your warden will show you how to operate this equipment.

How much will it cost?

The average rent for a bungalow in a sheltered scheme is about £43 per week .The service will cost you about £12 a week. This does not include the charge for general maintenance of the building such as cleaning the shared areas. We include the cost of the service in your rent. We will tell you if we change the charge and we try to keep the cost as low as possible.
