Doris Tait

Finalist North East Neighbour of the Year

Since Doris Tait left her life on the farm, her new neighbours have reaped a bumper crop of kindness.  The 71-year-old widow lost her husband George, a farmer, 16 years ago. And now she lived in Riverdale, in Townfoot, near the Northumberland village of Rothbury.

The grandma-of-two spends her time caring for sick neighbours, and helping out at community events with church friends from All Saints Rothbury.  Before she retired, Doris spent 14 years working with people with learning disabilities. And there is nothing she likes more than helping others.

“I try to help everyone,” she said. “I don't want anything in return, I would rather be the giver.”

When she is not busy looking after neighbours, Doris loves to spend time with daughter Gillian, 47, and grandchildren Craig, 18, and Nicola, 16.

She was nominated for the award by neighbour Christine Williams, who paid tribute to Doris' dedication.

Christine said:

“At the end of last year Doris was admitted to hospital for a major operation. But even in her bed, Doris was listening to everyone's concerns and giving advice.

“As soon as Doris was home from the hospital she was back in her front garden tending to the beautifully coloured plants and flowers.

“We believe the plants and flowers are as bright and beautiful as Doris herself.”
