He turned his life around, but still found
time to look out for others.
Carlton Okai, 17, of Hillsview Avenue, North
Kenton, has been determined to go back into the classroom to finish
his GCSEs. And now he is hoping to go to university to
study games and design, with the aim of eventually working in the
world of computer games. But since moving into
sheltered accommodation at Stepping Stones a year ago, he has tried
his hardest to be a good neighbour to the other homeless
youngsters.
“When I first moved in, I was just waiting
for the next Giro and keeping living,” he said. “But now I have
started going back to college and now I know where I am going, I
can think about other stuff more.
“I help people move in and help around the
block,” said Carlton, who is studying at Newcastle College and
hopes to go to Teeside University. “I introduce people and help
them with their shopping, just lending a hand.
“It all depends what kind of person you are,
it’s really just about doing a favour for someone.”
Project worker Shaz Russell of Stepping Stones
said:
“Many young people at our project
here at North Kenton can find it difficult, being so young and
finding themselves in the position of being homeless.
“But Carlton is an example of overcoming
barriers and becoming a successful tenant.
“Carlton has now developed into a mature,
pleasant young man, and has shown good acts of neighbourly
conduct,” said Shaz, who nominated him for the award.
