We have a range of new courses that you might be interested in.  All the courses are free to YHN tenants and leaseholders.  So if you want to learn more about YHN services or improve your CV or learn new interview techniques then we have the training for you!

We will provide refreshments at all training courses and you will get a certificate to show what you have learnt.

Frequently asked questions

Why do we provide free training to customers?

The Customer Involvement Team organises a training programme to give our customers different skills to help them in their tenancy and to provide them with lots of different information about YHN services. Customers will also have the opportunity to gain skills that can help them find employment.

How do I find out about new courses?

We will up date the events calendar on our website with any new training courses.  We will also promote new courses in our Homes & People newsletter.

How do I improve my Maths and English skills?

We are working in partnership with Newcastle City Learning who provide free maths and English courses.  At the end of each course you will receive a level 2 qualification.  To find out more contact Newcastle City Learning on 0191 278 2824.  You will need to tell them that you heard about the course from Your Homes Newcastle.

How do I improve my IT skills?

We are working in partnership with Newcastle City Learning who provide a range of computer courses across the city. To find out more contact Newcastle City Learning on 0800 073 0911.  These courses are free if you get housing benefit, council tax benefit, income support, job seekers allowance (income based) or working tax credit.  You will need to tell them that you heard about the course from Your Homes Newcastle.

How much do the courses cost?

All the courses are free to YHN tenants and leaseholders.  The computer courses provided by Newcastle City Learning are free if you get housing benefit, council tax benefit, income support, job seekers allowance (income based) or working tax credit.  You will need to tell them that you heard about the course from Your Homes Newcastle.

How long do the courses run for?

Most of the courses will only be a day course.  We will always state if they are going to be longer.  Some of the Newcastle City Learning courses may be longer so always check when you book a place.

What do I get out of the courses?

As well as the additional knowledge and skills gained from attending the training courses, they are also a great chance to meet new people. You will get a certificate for each course that you attend.

What happens after I book on a course?

You will be sent a confirmation letter confirming which course(s) you have booked on. Your place is then reserved for you. If the course you have requested a space on is full, you will be added to the reserve list and notified as such.

If you unable to attend a course you have booked on, it is very important that you let the Customer Involvement Team know as soon as possible. We will then let your place out to other customers. Please note if you do not attend a course you have booked on without letting the Customer Involvement Team know without a valid reason, you may not be allowed to attend future courses.   

I don’t drive / don’t have a car, what can you do to help?

If you have mobility problems we can arrange a taxi for you to and from training courses. Please note that a taxi should only be requested if you are unable to use public transport or if it is not convenient to do so. Please note that you may be asked to share a taxi with other customers. 

What if I want to go on a course that I can’t attend due to other commitments?

If you are unable to attend, let us know which course(s) you are interested in and we will try to re-arrange another course at a suitable time where possible. We can provide you with the course information for any course you are not able to attend.

I am a member of a Tenant and Resident Group in Newcastle what training do you provide to help residents groups?

Newcastle Tenants Federation provides training courses for members of tenant and residents groups in the city to help members make the most of being part a group.  Course include minute taking, keeping the books, equality and diversity, basic skills on running an effective meeting and chairing skills.
