The Westgate area

westgateWestgate Community Housing Office manages the YHN properties which were previously managed by the Elswick and Avison Street housing offices.

Housing and estates in the Westgate area

  • Elswick

There are four estates in the Elswick area - St Paul’s, Jubilee, Bentinck and the Elswick Triangle.  Jubilee and St Paul’s estates are mainly YHN but there are some Housing Association and privately owned properties too.  Many homes have been bought under the Right To Buy scheme on the Bentnick Estate while there is a high percentage of owner occupiers and private landlords in Elswick Triangle.

  • Avison Street area

There are over 1000 properties in this area, which can be split into different areas known locally as Mary Street Estate (which incorporates the Westgate multi-storeys), New Mills Estate, Arthur’s Hill and Spital Tongues (which was named after the Tuberculosis hospital).

The housing is made up of sheltered housing schemes, 1 and 2 bedroom flats in multi-storey blocks, Tyneside flats, bungalows and houses.

Local facilities and information

There is a well established Bangladeshi community in the area and this is reflected in the number of retail outlets offering specialised food stuffs and clothing.  Arthur’s Hill and Spital Tongues are close to Newcastle’s universities so there are many students and professionals in these areas.

Places of worship

There are mosques on Sceptre Street and Malvern Street.

Leisure

There are green areas at Leazes Park and the Town Moor.
