Housing and estates in Walker
Walker is a large area – accommodation in
Walker is a mixture of local authority stock, private rented homes
and owner occupied homes. Registered social landlords also have
some housing in this area.
The smaller Walkergate area is close to Walker
and has high levels of owner occupied homes and YHN
properties.
The Walker area has had and continues to have
major regeneration. Owner occupancy is increasing in the area with
help from private developers and registered social landlords.
Estates
| Eastfield estate
Properties on the Eastfield
estate are mainly Dutch style three bedroom
houses with ground floor accommodation. There are also a small
number of low-rise flats on the estate. These are very popular
properties.
There are three high rise blocks in the area,
each containing 90 one and two bedroom flats. These
blocks benefit from a 24 hour concierge service based in
Dean House (with video links to the other two blocks). There
is an active residents group within these blocks. Although
there are some vacancies in the multi-storey blocks, there is
a turnover and accommodation can usually be found.

Woodside Avenue
Woodside Avenue is a small street south
of the Eastfield estate, close to the river. There
are 36 three bedroom terraced properties which are very
popular. These houses have been improved internally and
externally as part of the Modern Homes Programme and have a
front and back garden. There is a residents group on this
small estate.

| Daisy Hill estate
This estate is in the Walkergate ward
and has traditional two and three bedroom family homes
with front and back gardens. There are also a few four
bedroom houses and the Milecastle House sheltered housing
scheme.
Daisy Hill is between Shields Road,
Scrogg Road and the Fossway, which is a main road into Newcastle
from Wallsend. Part of the estate has benefited from external
environmental improvements. For example, off street
parking for residents has recently been introduced.
The properties here have also been improved internally as part
of the Modern Homes programme. External work is due to
take place in 2009/10.
The estate has some small parts of the Roman
Wall within it and is close to the famous Segedunam site across the
border in Wallsend.

Waverdale estate
The Waverdale Avenue estate consists of
prefabricated semi-detached three bedroom houses with front
and back gardens. These houses were improved
externally in 2008 as part of the Modern Homes
Programme. These are extremely popular properties and
rarely become available.
Fairhaven / Diamond Row
estate
This estate is east of Titan Road and
has two and three bedroom family properties with front
and back gardens. Most of the estate has had
internal Modern Homes work carried out. External
improvements are planned for 2009/10. These properties
are very popular but do become available sometimes.
Winslow Place
This estate fits between the north of
Waverdale Avenue and south of Titan Road. The modern 1970s
terraced properties with gardens in this area are very
popular and rarely available. There are also a few flats on the
estate. There are some garages on the estate which are
available from YHN for a small rent.
Westbourne Avenue / Gardens
estate
This estate is south of the Fossway and north
of Welbeck Road. There are a number of different styles
of property on this estate which includes the Blackwell Avenue
area. These are all popular and not often available. Some
properties have yards instead of gardens.
Walker Park Gardens

These properties are south of Wharrier Street and north of Walker
Road. This is an unusual and attractive estate which was
transformed in the late 1980s to provide houses and flats close to
Walker Park. Some of these flats are accessed from an
external staircase. There is high demand for these
properties which had internal Modern Homes work carried out in
2007.
Close to this estate are low rise flats
(Saffron Place, Philipson Street and Jane Terrace) which
have secure door entry systems. There is a high demand
for these flats.
Proctor Court is a high rise block with a
resident caretaker. These are spacious one and
two bedroom flats and are very popular. Flats in this
block tend to be occupied by older people although people
of any age are welcome to bid for a property here.
Proctor Court is north of Walker Road and south of Wharrier
Street.
A sheltered accommodation scheme, Dr Ryan
House, is close by which is managed by YHN's sheltered housing
service.

Merlay
Hall |
These flats are close to the river, south of Walker
Road. A resident concierge is based in Merlay Hall with
video links to the two other blocks. Some flats have
superb views of the river Tyne. The three blocks
have one and two bedroom flats and are available from
time to time. Laundry facilities are available in Merlay
Hall. The three multi-story blocks will be receiving internal
improvements in 2008/9 as part of the Modern Homes programme.
There is a small number of terraced
houses on Dovercourt Road and Walker Road which are popular and
rarely available.
There is an active residents group
which has representatives from the multi-storeys and
Dovercourt Road.
Pottery Bank estate

This estate is also close to the river, south of Walker Road.
There are traditional two and three bedroom
semi-detached and terraced properties with large gardens - these
will be improved internally in 2008/9.
St Anthony’s House is a multi-storey
block which has 90 properties close to the
river. Some of the flats have good views of the
river. There is 24 hour concierge based in the ground floor of the
block. These one and two bedroom properties are
available from time to time.
Some parts of the area have
been demolished to allow private builders and registered
social landlords to redevelop the area. There is an active
residents group in the area.
Evistone Gardens estate
Evistone Gardens is west of Pottery Bank
and south of Walker Road. This estate has two
and three bedroom houses which will be improved
internally in 2008/9. The houses have front and back
gardens. Environmental works were carried out in
2006 to provide off street parking.
The estate is fairly popular and there are
rarely vacancies. There is a residents group in this area
which meets monthly.
Hexham Avenue estate

Hexham Avenue estate is north of Walker
Road and east of Scrogg Road. Houses on this estate have
two, three or four bedrooms with large
gardens. There is a community building on the estate
which offers support and facilities to local residents and welcomes
new residents to the estate.

There are three multi-storey blocks
between Duncan Street and Titan Road. The middle block
has a concierge which is video-linked to the other blocks.
The flats have one or two bedrooms and do not
have balconies.
There are occasionally vacancies in
these blocks but demand is still fairly high.
