Housing and estates in Shieldfield


Shieldfield Housing Office covers a wide area which includes Shieldfield, Battlefield, St Ann's, Low Heaton, Heaton, Sandyford and Jesmond.  Many of the properties in this area have benefited from refurbishment under the Modern Homes programme, which has helped make an already popular area even more sought after.

St AnnsSt Ann's (incorporating Tarset Street and Breamish House)

St Ann's is a popular residential estate situated on the edge of the Ouseburn valley. The estate is mainly made up of low rise blocks surrounding well maintained communal areas.

The YHN properties in this area are a mix of one, two, and three bedroom flats which have been brought up to Modern Homes standards.

At the eastern end of the St Ann's development are Tarset Street which comprises of two smaller linked low rise blocks and Breamish House which is a linked block with commanding views of the Newcastle quayside.

The area benefits from excellent public transport links and local shopping facilities, and is close to local schools.

These identical blocks offer commanding views over Jesmond Dene, Sandyford, Jesmond Vale, Heaton and Low Heaton. Shieldfield House also offers views of the city and is within easy walking distance of the city centre.

Addison/Grafton Estate and the Denmark Street Estate (a.k.a. the Rington's Estate)

These popular residential estates are within easy walking distance of Shields Road, and the thriving shopping areas of Heaton Road and Chillingham Road.

Both developments are a mix of semi traditional and non traditional properties with a range of low rise, mid rise and mutli storey flats, maisonettes and houses; many of which have private garden areas.
They benefit from good public transport links and are close to local schools.

Melbourne CourtMelbourne Court

Melbourne Court is a popular residential block situated within easy walking distance of the east quayside and Ouseburn valley. Newcastle city centre, the Baltic and Sage are also within walking distance of Melbourne Court.

The YHN properties within the three low rise blocks which make up Melbourne Court have all recently been brought up to Modern Homes standards. These homes are mainly one bedroom and two bedroom flats and maisonettes.

The area benefits from excellent public transport links and local shopping facilities, and is close to local schools.

 

Jesmond, Sandyford, Low Heaton, and Heaton (including the Avenues, the Railway Streets, and Heaton Park Court)

These are very popular areas where property is in high demand and low supply. The majority of YHN homes in these areas are Tyneside flats and terraced houses with some none traditional units. There are very few YHN homes left in Jesmond and Jesmond Vale because these have been bought under the Right to Buy scheme.

The bulk of YHN properties are in Heaton and Low Heaton which are thriving mixed tenure areas popular with young people and students - illustrated by the popularity of the shopping areas on Chillingham Road and Heaton Road and the range of shops, food and drink outlets there.

Heaton Park Court is a multi storey block that sits at the edge of Heaton, Low Heaton, and the Addison Grafton estate, and is within easy walking distance of Shields Road, and the thriving shopping areas of Heaton Road and Chillingham Road.

Gibson StreetGibson Street and Battlefield

This is a popular residential area situated on the edge of the quayside and the city centre.

Central Shieldfield is made up of a diverse range of property types where traditional housing sits next to non traditional units and Tyneside terraces. The area is very popular because of its close proximity to the city centre and universities.

 Clarence House and Stoddart House are two low rise linked blocks next to the parade of shops at Wretham Place which have been fully refurbished under the Modern Homes programme. They are a mix of one bedroom, two bedroom and three bedroom flats and maisonettes.

King Charles Tower, Lort House and Pandon Court are three multi storey blocks which are on the edge of the city centre. The blocks have been refurbished as part of the Modern Homes programme and are popular with people who want the convenience of city centre living but the sense of community that comes with living in an established residential area like Shieldfield.

Henry Square and Napier Street are mainly low rise blocks, situated at the far south east and north west of central Shieldfield, which have a mix of communal and private garden areas. The blocks are a mix of flats and maisonettes though Henry Square does have a small number of houses. All of these properties have been refurbished to Modern Homes standard.

The Milton estate is a semi traditional development which is a mix of flats and houses with private garden areas.  The rest of central Shieldfield is a mix of older Tyneside flats and terraced houses, traditionally built flats, houses and maisonettes, and non traditional flats and houses.
