Housing and estates in Shieldfield
Shieldfield Housing Office covers a wide area
which includes Shieldfield, Battlefield, St Ann's, Low Heaton,
Heaton, Sandyford and Jesmond. Many of the properties in this
area have benefited from refurbishment under the Modern Homes
programme, which has helped make an already popular area even more
sought after.
St Ann's (incorporating Tarset Street and Breamish
House)
St Ann's is a popular residential estate
situated on the edge of the Ouseburn valley. The estate is mainly
made up of low rise blocks surrounding well maintained communal
areas.
The YHN properties in this area are a mix of one, two, and three
bedroom flats which have been brought up to Modern Homes
standards.
At the eastern end of the St Ann's development are Tarset Street
which comprises of two smaller linked low rise blocks and Breamish
House which is a linked block with commanding views of the
Newcastle quayside.
The area benefits from excellent public transport links and local
shopping facilities, and is close to local schools.
Shieldfield House and Vale
House.
These identical blocks offer commanding views over Jesmond Dene,
Sandyford, Jesmond Vale, Heaton and Low Heaton. Shieldfield House
also offers views of the city and is within easy walking distance
of the city centre.
Both blocks are restricted to people who are 55 years or older
and are highly sought after. They have already benefited from
internal Modern Homes improvements.
Addison/Grafton Estate and the Denmark
Street Estate (a.k.a. the Rington's Estate)
These popular residential estates are within
easy walking distance of Shields Road, and the thriving shopping
areas of Heaton Road and Chillingham Road.
Both developments are a mix of semi traditional and non
traditional properties with a range of low rise, mid rise and mutli
storey flats, maisonettes and houses; many of which have private
garden areas.
They benefit from good public transport links and are close to
local schools.
Most YHN properties in this area have benefited from internal
Modern Homes improvements and external work is due to follow
shortly.
Melbourne Court
Melbourne Court is a popular residential block
situated within easy walking distance of the east quayside and
Ouseburn valley. Newcastle city centre, the Baltic and Sage are
also within walking distance of Melbourne Court.
The YHN properties within the three low rise
blocks which make up Melbourne Court have all recently been brought
up to Modern Homes standards. These homes are mainly one
bedroom and two bedroom flats and maisonettes.
The area benefits from excellent public transport links and local
shopping facilities, and is close to local schools.
Jesmond, Sandyford, Low Heaton, and
Heaton (including the Avenues, the Railway Streets, and Heaton Park
Court)
These are very popular areas where property is
in high demand and low supply. The majority of YHN homes in these
areas are Tyneside flats and terraced houses with some none
traditional units. There are very few YHN homes left in
Jesmond and Jesmond Vale because these have been bought under the
Right to Buy scheme.
The bulk of YHN properties are in Heaton and
Low Heaton which are thriving mixed tenure areas popular with young
people and students - illustrated by the popularity of
the shopping areas on Chillingham Road and Heaton Road and the
range of shops, food and drink outlets there.
Heaton Park Court is a multi storey block that sits at the edge
of Heaton, Low Heaton, and the Addison Grafton estate, and is
within easy walking distance of Shields Road, and the thriving
shopping areas of Heaton Road and Chillingham Road.
Gibson
Street and Battlefield
This is a popular residential area
situated on the edge of the quayside and the city centre.

Central Shieldfield (including
Clarence House, Stoddart House, Milton Estate, King Charles
Tower, Lort House, Pandon Court, Napier Street, Henry
Square)
Central Shieldfield is made up of a diverse
range of property types where traditional housing sits next to non
traditional units and Tyneside terraces. The area is very popular
because of its close proximity to the city centre
and universities.
Much of the YHN housing in this
area has already benefited from refurbishment under the Modern
Homes programme.
Clarence
House and Stoddart House are two low rise linked blocks next to the
parade of shops at Wretham Place which have been fully refurbished
under the Modern Homes programme. They are a mix of one bedroom,
two bedroom and three bedroom flats and maisonettes.
King Charles Tower, Lort House and Pandon
Court are three multi storey blocks which are on the edge of the
city centre. The blocks have been refurbished as part of the Modern
Homes programme and are popular with people who want the
convenience of city centre living but the sense of community
that comes with living in an established residential area like
Shieldfield.
Henry Square and Napier Street are mainly low
rise blocks, situated at the far south east and north west of
central Shieldfield, which have a mix of communal and private
garden areas. The blocks are a mix of flats and maisonettes though
Henry Square does have a small number of houses. All of these
properties have been refurbished to Modern Homes standard.
The Milton estate is a semi traditional
development which is a mix of flats and houses with private garden
areas. The rest of central Shieldfield is a mix of older
Tyneside flats and terraced houses, traditionally built flats,
houses and maisonettes, and non traditional flats and houses.
