Schools

The Byker area has two primary schools within the estate – Byker Primary and St Lawrence’s Roman Catholic Primary.    Secondary education is available at Heaton Manor, Walker Technological College and Benfield School.

Public Transport

The Byker Estate is only a short hop from Newcastle city centre with numerous bus services available on Shields Road and Commercial Road.  Byker also has its own Metro station.

Healthcare

Doctors, dentists and a walk-in medical centre are all available in the shopping area of Shields Road which is only a short walk from the Byker Estate.

Leisure

East End Pool is just off Shields Road and offers many different classes and has a café. Visit Newcastle Leisure for East End Pool programmes and pricelists. 

Allendale Community Centre on Allendale Road runs many activities and is also a social club.

Shopping - many different types of shops are on Shields Road and in the retail park based at the top of Shields Road.

Advice and support

 

East End Library is just off Shields Road and offers IT facilities including photocopiers and printers. 

Brinkburn Centre on Brinkburn Street this centre is part of Newcastle Libraries and also has IT facilities including access to the internet.

East End Customer Service Centre on Shields Road provides access to all Newcastle City Council Services.  Visit East End Customer Service Centre for information about services available and directions.

Byker Community Centre on Headlam Street hosts a range of activities and clubs and also has IT facilities and access to the internet.

Money Wise Newcastle Credit Union on Headlam Street is the largest community development credit union in the North East with approximately 4,500 members.

African Community Advice North East (ACANE) at Raby Cross provides information, advice and social activities to people from African communities.
