There are three multi storey blocks in Blakelaw for people over 40 which benefit from the Concierge service.  These flats are in high demand but rarely become available.  The 165 estate is made up of large family houses and bungalows.  Many properties in this area have been bought under the Right to Buy scheme.

Cowgate is a traditional estate with one and two bedroom flats, two, three and four bedroom houses and one bedroom bungalows.  The housing in this area is a mixture of Right to Buy properties, Registered Social Landlords and private houses.

Leisure and Sport

  • Newcastle Leisure at Kenton School is a brand new sports facility which forms part of the new Kenton School complex.  It opened its doors to the general public on 3rd November 2008. The Sports Facility is managed by Newcastle Leisure from 4.30pm Monday to Friday as well as at weekends and during school holiday periods. The facility has a main sports hall with 6 badminton courts, a gymnasium, dance studio and one of NCC's Impulse fitness facilities offering a superb range of cardio vascular and resistance training equipment.

  • Blakelaw Park is open to everyone. The tennis courts, basketball, skateboarding, BMXing and play area are free to everyone at all times. The multi-use sports pitch can be booked through Parks and Countryside by phoning 0191 277 3533. On Tuesday and Friday evenings there is free community football for local people from 5-9pm. A coach is provided during these sessions.

  • The Outer West pool opened in 1970 and has recently been refurbished with a new Impulse fitness suite and family friendly changing rooms. It has three pools: the main 6 lane competition pool (Newcastle’s longest at 33.3 meters); beginners' teaching pool; and a 25m training tank for schools, clubs and after school lessons. The facility offers something for everybody, from 6 month old babies to senior citizens, with an all-encompassing programme of activities designed to cater for the whole community.

Projects and services

Environmental improvements have been carried out in this area funded by the Area Project Fund.  This has included repairs to fencing and pavements and improving the entrances of multi storey blocks.

YHN staff meet regularly with the Cowgate Community Forum, which coordinates community and voluntary organisations.  There are regular meetings with Residents’ Groups, the Police and Environmental Wardens.
