On their bikes
We've got on our bikes and created a project designed to
get young homeless people into work.
Our Bike It enterprise sees young people from the Young People's
Services supported accommodation hostel refurbish second-hand and
discarded bikes and then sell them on.
Some of the bikes have been donated by Premier Waste and some
have come from local police.
The enterprise is in its early stages but has already
refurbished 13 bikes which were donated to Oakley Garden School
last week.
Bike It has attracted national attention and is one of the
winners of the Spark Award which will see it receive top class
business advice and additional funding. Spark is a programme
designed to build and inspire organisations to tackle homelessness
through social enterprise.
Young People's Services project worker George Simpson is managing
the project and working with young people to help them repair the
bikes. He said:
"Bike It is a great way to teach skills
employers need and as Bike It expands we want our young people to
learn things like stock control and administration."
