YHN Community Award
This award is for a YHN tenant or leaseholder who may have
been involved in community or charity work, or started or been part
of a tenants’ or residents’ group.
And the winner is...
John Greensitt
Cornerstone of the community John Greensitt is the
man who gets things done at Hilltop House in West Denton,
Newcastle. John organises trips and nights out for his neighbours,
as well as acting as the neighbourhood’s unofficial handyman.
He recently sorted a computer course to help pensioners brush up
their IT skills. His neighbours describes him as ‘very kind’ and a
‘one –off.’
John says ‘What gives me the greatest satisfaction is seeing their
faces when they enjoy themselves after something I’ve
organised.’
The finalists
Andrew McDermot
Keen gardener Andrew McDermot has spruced up his local
community. The green-fingered 41-year-old loves gardening and his
neighbours say he has transformed the area around their homes in
Raby Gate, Byker.
As secretary for the Byker Village Tenants Association, his do-good
deeds for the community have also included baking bread and setting
up a communal composting scheme.
Grateful Twaiyba Moussa said the whole community has been turned
around thanks to Andrew’s efforts with the shovel and compost!
Tommy Webster
Tommy Webster is always happy to lend a helping hand, Even at
86, he’s always keeping an eye out for his neighbours.
Mr Webster, who lives in St Ann’s Close, Byker, has been a
member of the tenants association for more than 25 years. Always
smiling, he’ll help out any of his neighbours with the odd jobs
they can’t manage- and he’s built up some great friendships within
his community.
Gwen Brown, a neighbour said, ‘He’ll do anything for anyone…he
has always been there to help out when I need something fixing.
He’s a good man and a great neighbour.’
