Community facility celebrates its 30th birthday in style
Celebrations to mark the 30th anniversary of a popular Walker
community facility get underway tomorrow
Reporters are invited to join the party between 2pm and 5pm at
Monkchester Green where residents, their families and
representatives from Your Homes Newcastle and Cllr David and
Margaret Woods will be in attendance to mark the 30th birthday of
the popular community room.
The sheltered accommodation scheme which includes Monkchester
and Kingston Greens, on Monkchester Road, was built in response to
the 1924 Housing Act and the community facility inside was added in
1979 to enable residents and the community to come together to
socialise.
In 1988 the scheme underwent a major refurbishment and today the
popular scheme houses 50 residents, six of which are couples.
Sheltered housing officer Derek Hornby who has lived there
since1993 and had his wedding party there, will be available for
interview.
The building is also used by Your Homes Newcastle and Newcastle
City Council but is also available to community groups and
businesses.
