Byker - Bolam Coyne
Scheme
Fifteen 2 and 3 bed family homes
Scheme details
Bolam Coyne was originally built by Ralph Erskine within the
Byker Estate in the 1970’s. The mixture of 1 to 4 bed
properties within Bolam Coyne made it difficult to sustain due to
the varying needs of the people living within the building.
This led to void properties and anti-social behaviour. A
decision was made by Newcastle City Council to decant the
properties in 2000. The building remained empty for 10 years
and was targeted with vandalism and anti-social behaviour.
YHN is working with Wates Living Space, English Heritage and
Mike Drage (one of the original architects on the Byker estate) to
refurbish Bolam Coyne. This will turn the original seventeen
properties into fifteen 2 and 3 bed family homes built to a modern
day sustainable standard.
