  • Three star excellent services
  • A quality workforce
  • Refurbishing and building homes.

We are committed to equality and diversity.  We value and respect the rich variety of people from diverse backgrounds, cultures and beliefs who are part of the community we serve.

We aim to achieve equality of opportunity by removing direct and indirect discrimination, harassment and victimisation on the grounds of:

  • Age
  • Gender
  • Race, colour, nationality, national or ethnic origin
  • Disability
  • Religious belief, or non belief
  • Marital status, family circumstances, or caring responsibilities
  • Lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender identity
  • Membership or non membership of trade unions, or involvement or non involvement in trade union activity
  • Any other status identified within the European Convention of Human Rights.

Our policies, procedures and working practices in both employment and service delivery reflect our commitment.  We comply with legal requirements and good guidance such as:

  • Race Relations Act
  • Sex Discrimination Act
  • Disability Discrimination Act
  • EU Directives covering age, religion or belief and sexual orientation
  • Audit Commission Key Lines of Enquiry (KLOE) 31 – Diversity
  • We continue to invest to give people modern homes and safe and attractive neighbourhoods
  • We deliver excellent housing management through local offices and staff who place tenants at the heart of their work
  • We respond to local needs
  • We meet the diverse needs of the communities of Newcastle
  • We meet service standards that have been set in partnership with tenants and leaseholders
  • We explore new and innovative ways of delivering services
  • We support independent living.

Our work is underpinned by the following principles:

  • Involving tenants, leaseholders and customers
  • Providing choice based on tenants’ wishes
  • Ensuring equality and recognising diversity
  • Valuing and developing our staff to deliver excellent services
  • Making the best use of our resources
  • Being open and accountable
  • Working in partnership to achieve more than we can alone.

Our vision is that by 2010 we will have helped make Newcastle a successful, prosperous, and cosmopolitan city.  A city that makes full use of the creativity, innovation and talents of its people and organisations. And that places them at the leading edge of the national and international economy, making Newcastle one of the best places in Europe to live, work and visit.

We will help Newcastle become a collaborative and cohesive city, where everyone can reach their full potential. We will contribute to a safe, healthy and sustainable city. We want communities to see the positive benefits from the distinctiveness and the diversity of people's backgrounds and circumstances. We want lively neighbourhoods from which residents can access high quality services. We will help deliver an environment that we are proud to pass on to future generations. We believe that practical action on equal opportunities will help us achieve this vision because greater equality will mean we can better address the needs of all communities.

We will pursue this through continuous improvement in the way we:

  • Provide services to our customers
  • Recruit and support our employees
  • Work with other organisations and partners
  • Involve communities
  • Procure services and contracts.
